동사 'address'의 여러가지 의미

오늘은 동사로서 address가 어떤 의미를 갖고 있는지 알아 보려고 합니다. 

주소가 위치를 지정 하는 것처럼 address는 특정 대상이나 문제를 정확히 지정하고 타겟팅하는 이미지가 강합니다.

1. 보내다 (Send)

편지나 소포를 특정 수신자에게 보내는 것을 의미합니다. 

 

자주 쓰이는 형태 :

address + something + to + recipient

2. 연설하다, ...에게 말을 걸다 (Speak to)

특정 청중이나 그룹에게 연설하거나 말을 건네는 것을 의미합니다. 

 

자주 쓰이는 형태 :

address + audience/group (청중/그룹)

3. 문제·상황을 다루다 (Handle/Deal with)

문제나 이슈를 해결하거나 처리하는 것을 의미합니다.

4. 부르다 (Call by Name)

특정 이름이나 호칭으로 사람을 부르는 것을 의미합니다.

호칭앞에 by 혹은 as를 사용하여 부르는 방식을 나타낼 수 있어요.

 

그렇다면 by와 as중 어떤 것을 쓰면 좋을까요?

 

He prefers to be addressed by 'Doctor.'

이런식으로 호칭이라는 큰틀만 쓰면 by

He prefers to be addressed as 'Doctor Lee.'

이렇게 조금 더 자세히 짚어서 쓰면 as

 

자주 쓰이는 형태 :

address + someone + by(/as) name/title (이름/직함)

5. 지정하다 (Designate)

특정 역할이나 임무로 지정하거나 할당하는 것을 의미합니다. 

중요한 임무만 말하는 것은 아니고 가볍게 뭔가를 지정할 때도 자주 쓰여요. 

이 때, 지정하다라는 의미라면 동사로 쓰이지만, 지정되었다라는 의미의 수동태 구조일 때는 과거분사로 쓰여서 be동사가 필요합니다.  

 

자주 쓰이는 형태 :

address + someone + to/for + specific position/task (특정 위치/임무)

someone + be동사 + addressd(과거분사) + to/for + specific position/task (특정 위치/임무)
