come to terms with :  …와 합의를 보다 /~을 받아 들이다.

우리 지난번에 “동의하다”라는 의미를 가진 표현 ‘see eye to eye’와 ‘on the same page’라는 표현을 배웠었는데 기억 하시나요?

동의하다 : see eye to eye, be on the same page

지난번에 이어 오늘도 “동의하다”라는 의미를 가진 표현을 알아 보려고 합니다. 바로 “come to terms with”라는 표현인데요.

‘terms’가 가진 뜻 중에는 ‘조건 /(계약서 등의) 조항 /항목’이라는 뜻이 있어요. 그래서 ‘come to (=reach; ~이르다)’와 함께 쓰여 ‘합의에 이르다’ 즉, “(누군가와) ~와 합의하다 /동의하다”라는 의미로 쓰인 답니다.

여기서 좀더 확장 되어 ‘(상황이 여의치 않아) 동의 /합의하고 받아 들이다’라는 의미로 “(어쩔 수 없이) 인정하다 /받아들이다”라는 뜻으로도 쓰입니다.
