(in the) meantime VS (in the) meanwhile

"(in the) meantime"과 "(in the) meanwhile"는 모두 부사로 사용될 때 "그동안에", "그사이에"라는 의미를 가진 표현입니다. 

하지만 비슷해 보이는 두 표현 사이에는 약간의 차이가 있는데요. 

 

1. meantime :
• "Meantime"은 두 사건 또는 시간 간격 사이의 기간을 나타냅니다.

２. meanwhile :
• "Meanwhile"은  "한편" 또는 "동시에"와 같은 의미가 내포되어 있으며, 두 사건의 대조나 병행 상황을 강조합니다.

그러면 "in the meantime"이나 "In the meanwhile"은 "meantime"이나 "meanwhile"을 단독으로 쓰는 것과 무슨 차이가 있는 걸까요?

"In the meantime"과 "In the meanwhile"은 기본적으로 "meantime"과 "meanwhile"의 의미를 부사로 강조한 것으로서 의미 상으로는 차이가 없다고 합니다. 

하지만 "meantime"을 부사로 써도 문법적으로 문제는 없지만 문맥에 따라 자연스럽지 않은 경우가 있다고 해요.

"in the mean time"으로 쓰는 것이 더 자연스럽다고 합니다.

"meanwhile"과 "in the meanwhile"은 둘 모두 자연스러운 표현이지만, "meanwhile"을 단독으로 쓰는 경우가 더 일반적이라고 합니다.
