walk(/talk) (someone) through : 자세히 설명하다, 차근차근 알려주다, 안내해 주다

‘설명하다’라는 말을 영어로 하면 어떤 것들이 떠오르시나요? 주로 ‘explain’ 혹은 ‘describe’가 떠오르시죠?

오늘은 위 두 가지 외에 자연스럽게 ‘설명하다’를 말할 때 쓰기 좋은 표현을 가져와 봤습니다.

바로 “walk (someone) through”이라는 표현인데요.

한 걸음 씩 걸어가듯 모든 process를 지나며 설명 해 주는 느낌으로 “자세히 설명하다”, “차근차근 알려주다”라는 의미를 가지는 표현 입니다.

중간에 하이픈(-)을 넣어 “자세한 설명 (walk-through)”이라는 뜻의 명사로도 쓸 수 있어요.

비슷한 표현으로는 “talk (someone) through”라는 표현이 있는데 지속적으로 지시를 내려서 뭔가를 배울 수 있도록 알려주는 느낌의 표현 이랍니다.

사실 두 표현에 큰 차이는 없다고 봐도 무방한 수준이고 원어민들도 교차사용 하는 경우가 많으니 힘겹게 구분해서 쓸 필요는 없어요.

2. Talk someone through : Enable someone to perform a task by giving them continuous instruction.
